CLASS SUMMARY:
   Under direction, performs work of moderate difficulty relative to the design and installation of major city projects. Performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
    This is the third level professional class in the Structure/Landscape Designer series. An incumbent of this class is concerned with services dealing with project design, project administration, and supervision of office personnel. .

    Incumbents perform work of moderate difficulty in the research, program establishment, design and construction of projects in their specialized field under the direction of the senior professional. Incumbents are responsible for a complete program or project. This class differs from the next lower class of Structure/Landscape Designer II in that incumbents of the latter perform work of moderate difficulty under general supervision. This class differs from that of senior professional in that the latter is responsible for the successful performance of the Section and under general direction performs work of considerable difficulty.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
   Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in the desired specialty, plus three (3) years of experience in professional work.

  Acceptance by the State of California for professional registration testing may be substituted for the degree requirement. Proof of acceptance must be provided at the time of application.

Licensing Requirements:
  Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

QUENCY
1. Develops general guidelines, design elements, definition of necessary facilities and improvements, and analyses of all relevant factors in developing and constructing building and landscape improvements both now and in the future. Produces documents for Council review and approval.  
2. Provides sketches, drawings, construction documents, specifications and reports necessary for a contractor to bid on and accurately build a variety of municipal improvements such as buildings, parks, playgrounds, pedestrian walkways and malls.  
3. Coordinates details, paperwork, workloads of office personnel, meetings, decision making, cost analysis and estimates necessary to take a project from project definition through design, public bidding and construction, to completion of the project.  
4. Coordinates improvement projects with other departments, flood control districts, school districts, concerned community groups and individuals and other entities and agencies.  
5.  Provides analysis and estimates cost implications of construction, bidding, staff time costs and change orders.  
6. May plan, assign, direct and evaluate the work of other professional and sub-professional employees on landscape architecture projects.  
7. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.  
8. Analyzes field data and prepares drawings and specifications to conform to establish requirements for municipal projects.  
9. Reviews designs prepared by consultants to ensure conformity to project requirements, building codes and ordinances.  
10. Manages construction projects to ensure conformance to project requirements.  
11. Prepares all documents required by various departments within the City related to project information.  
12. Suggests design changes or improvements necessary to municipal projects.  
13 Provides contract administration for municipal projects for conformance to City rules and regulations.  
14. Designs office layout for moves and/or re-design of various departments within City office buildings to achieve more efficient utilization of space and equipment  
15. Maintains easily available records of drawing and specifications to further develop existing facilities to meet future needs.  
16. Provides consultation to other departments and divisions for advice on ongoing or contemplated problems such as choice and use of materials, current requirements for the physically handicapped and Uniform Building Code requirements.  
17. Trains and directs the work of sub-professional employees involved in municipal projects to provide the necessary technical advice and direction in executing work schedules.  
18. Consults with architects, landscape architects, engineers, contractors, community groups and other City departments in conjunction with the programming and design and construction of municipal projects.  
19. Designs municipal facilities.  
20. Prepares and coordinates consultant agreements.  
21. Prepares reports and Council memos for City projects.  
22. Provides direction to building inspectors on assigned projects.  
23. Coordinates the work of consultants to produce a complete project, both in-house and private.  
24. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
