CLASS PURPOSE
Under immediate supervision, performs work of routine
difficulty involving participation in and support of a variety of
recreational programs of outdoor or indoor activities.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not
include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the
duties which may be performed.)
- Organizes and teaches various sports and games that are
suitable and safe for groups of different sizes,
abilities, and ages; officiates or provides instruction
in rules of play.
- Conducts special recreation activities such as arts and
crafts, dance or drama, puppeteering, therapeutics,
gerontology, youth and adult activities.
- Preserves order and discipline among participants at a
park, playground, sports field, or recreation center.
- Conducts group and individual athletic, recreational,
instructional, or entertainment activities.
- Assists in organizing and conducting special recreational
events such as trips and outings.
- Issues and collects supplies and equipment and ensures
that instructional or craft materials, equipment,
facility, fields, and courts are in readiness.
- Performs first aid and CPR in case of injury.
- Performs routine safety checks at facilities and watches
for safety of participants and spectators.
- May transport recreation program participants including
youth, seniors, and persons with disabilities in City
vehicles.
- May coordinate recreation activities for diverse
populations (i.e., at-risk youth/high-risk youth, persons
with disabilities, seniors).
- Participates in recruiting and coordinating the
activities of volunteers in recreation programs.
- Keeps records, prepares reports, and performs other
routine duties utilizing a variety of office equipment.
- Participates in preparing publicity such as calendars,
newsletters, flyers, posters, brochures, etc. for
recreation activities.
- Provides office or recreation center assistance as
required.
- Provides facility coverage for rentals.
- Maintains collaborative relationships with schools, other
governmental agencies, community-based organizations,
etc.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class is the second level of three in the Recreation
Leadership series. It differs from the next lower class of
Recreation Aide in that incumbents of the latter class function
in a support capacity to other recreation personnel. It differs
from the next higher class of Senior Recreation Leader in that
incumbents of the latter class may supervise this class and are
responsible for planning and conducting a variety of recreation
activities and events.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic recreation and leisure activities and
events.
- Knowledge of rules, equipment, and materials necessary
for a variety of common sports, games, and activities
suitable for all ages.
- Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written
instructions.
- Ability to learn to conduct a variety of recreation
activities.
- Ability to perform simple monetary transactions, such as
making correct change and keeping routine records.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with program participants, co-workers, and
the general public.
- Ability to identify unsafe conditions affecting
participants.
- Ability to plan a simple recreation activity or event.
Competency Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the basic principles and techniques of first
aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Knowledge of City and Department rules, policies, and
procedures.
- Ability to plan, conduct, adapt, and evaluate a variety
of age and developmentally appropriate recreation
activities.
- Ability to maintain collaborative relationships with
other City staff and service providers.
- Ability to effectively manage conflict in a recreation
setting.
- Ability to recognize and appropriately respond to a
variety of conditions affecting participant safety.
Education
Completion of high school, General Education Development (GED)
Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.
Experience
No minimum requirement.
Acceptable Substitutions
None.
Licenses/Certificates
- As a condition of employment in some designated
positions, possession of a valid State of California
Class A or B drivers license with applicable
endorsements may be required in the performance of job
duties.
- Possession of a valid first aid certificate may be
required.
- Possession of a valid CPR certificate may be required.
Necessary Special Qualification
Those applicants in their last semester of high school are
permitted to apply, but will be required to provide proof of
graduation prior to obtaining a work assignment.
