LIFEGUARD (PT) (6142)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty at a City-operated swimming pool by standing watch to protect life and enforce regulations. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Observes swimmers at a swimming pool, warning those who violate the safety rules of the pool, and expelling them, if necessary, because of willful disobedience of the rules.
- Rescues swimmers who are in distress.
- Administers artificial respiration when necessary according to the prescribed method.
- May train and direct the work of lower level workers as assigned.
- Participates in pool maintenance when necessary.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents of this class supervise the conduct of swimmers in order to maintain safety in the swimming pool. Incumbents enforce swimming pool rules and may participate in swim instruction programs. This class differs from that of Instructor-Lifeguard in that the latter is primarily responsible for swimming instruction.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of approved lifesaving methods for water safety and rescue of swimmers.
- Ability to swim skillfully.
- Ability to immediately evaluate an emergency situation and to act decisively and effectively.
- Ability to administer artificial respiration according to the prescribed method.
- Ability to handle crowds and direct individuals and groups.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to prepare reports.

Licenses/Certificates
- Possession of current certificate indicating successful completion of an approved course in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional Rescuer (CPR/FPR) as prescribed by the American Red Cross or as prescribed by the American Heart Association; B.C.L.S. – C with a completion date less than one year old at the time of appointment.
- Possession of a current Lifeguard Training Certificate.
- Possession of current certificate in First Aid, as prescribed by the State Department of Health, at the time of appointment.
