INSTRUCTOR-LIFEGUARD (PT) (6143)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in providing swimming instruction for children and adults at a City-operated swimming pool facility. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Organizes and conducts swimming instruction classes for beginners, intermediates, or advanced swimmers at a swimming pool.
- Observes swimmers at a swimming pool; warns swimmers who violate the safety rules of the pool and expels them, if necessary, because of willful disobedience of the rules or refusal to follow proper instructions concerning safety.
- Rescues swimmers who are in distress.
- Administers artificial respiration, if necessary, according to the prescribed method.
- Officiates at competitive swim meets.
- Participates in pool maintenance when necessary.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents of this class function as swimming instructors and lifeguards, and supervise the conduct of swimmers in order to maintain safety in the swimming pool. Employees work under general supervision of the Swimming Pool Manager. Work requires teaching skill, ability to act decisively in an emergency situation, and maintaining order with crowds.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of swimming and the techniques of teaching swimming to children and adult individuals and groups.
- Knowledge of approved lifesaving methods for water safety and rescue of swimmers.
- Ability to immediately evaluate an emergency situation and to act decisively and effectively.
- Ability to administer artificial respiration according to the prescribed method.
- Ability to instruct in the techniques of swimming and lifesaving.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to prepare reports.

Licenses/Certificates
- Possession of current certificate indicating successful completion of an approved course in Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional Rescuer (CPR/FPR) as prescribed by the American Red Cross or as prescribed by the American Heart Association; B.C.L.S. – C with a completion date less than one year old at the time of appointment.
- Possession of a current Lifeguard Training Certificate.
- Possession of current certificate in First Aid, as prescribed by the State Department of Health, at the time of appointment.
- Possession of current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Authorization Certificate
