LITERACY PROGRAM SPECIALIST PT (6237)
CLASS
PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in
executing programs and projects for the adult literacy program of the San Jose
Public Library.
TYPICAL
DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not
include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which
may be performed.)
Assists
the Literacy Program Coordinator with the administration of the program.
May
supervise and give direction to support and volunteer staff and assist in
training less experienced staff in methods and procedures of work as
assigned.
Gathers,
organizes & evaluates data related to literacy issues, projects,
programs or reports.
Develops
and administers learner assessments.
Matches
learners and tutors, monitors the progress of each learner/tutor match.
Attends
conferences and seminars to develop tutoring strategies and effective
literacy methods, including tutoring strategies.
Trains
new tutors in a variety of literacy methodologies, plans and implements
workshops and meetings for learners and tutors.
Develops
and maintains good working relationships with other community literacy
providers and other organizations involved in literacy.
Maintains
accurate records on learners and tutors.
Assists
with publicizing the program and recruiting volunteers.
Incumbents
of this class perform administrative functions involving program operations.
This class differs from all other more general staff functions in the
City service in that an incumbent of this class coordinates, integrates and
generally conducts moderately complex administrative assignments involving adult
literacy administration, and assists with program evaluation, and must be
knowledgeable about literacy methodologies, techniques and materials.

Minimum

of the principles and practices of organization, administration and
management.
Knowledge
of literacy materials, techniques and methodologies.
Ability
to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
Ability
to exercise initiative regarding administrative matters.

to teach tutoring techniques to others and to assess effectiveness of the
tutoring process.
Ability
to handle sensitive and confidential information.

to understand, interpret and apply instruction, rules and regulations.
