The San Jose Police Officers' Association (POA) represents approximately 1375 FTEs in the Police Department, from Police Recruits to Deputy Chiefs of Police.

Cost of Salary Increases

The City’s cost of providing a salary increase to all City employees is approximately $7.3 million a year for each 1% increase.

For employees represented by the POA, the City’s cost of providing a 1% raise is approximately $1.9 million per year.

As a comparison, the first year cost of adding one entry level police officer position is approximately $123,000.

POA Retirement Information

Currently, San Jose Police Officers are eligible to receive a pension of 90% of their salary after 30 years of service.  Every year, the current amount of the pension is increased by 3% as a cost-of-living adjustment.

In addition, San Jose Police Officers are currently eligible for lifetime retiree healthcare benefits that pays for 100% of the Kaiser premium for single or family coverage.
