LEED Rating: 6 credits/17 points

Sustainable Sites | Water Efficiency | Energy & Atmosphere | Materials & Resources
Indoor Environmental Quality | Innovation & Design Process

Energy and atmosphere considerations lead to minimizing energy use for building operation. These measures help avoid toxic emissions which contribute to air pollution, acid rain, global warming and mining impacts. Points can be achieved in the following categories. For more detailed information on LEED requirements, please refer to the USGBC’s LEED Rating System.

Prerequisite 1: Fundamental Building Systems Commissioning – verify building systems are designed, installed and calibrated to operated as intended

Prerequisite 2: Minimum Energy Performance – meet Title 24 (or ASHRAE/IESNA for buildings outside California) or local code building energy performance requirements, whichever is more stringent

Prerequisite 3: Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Reduction in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) Equipment – zero use of CFCs

  1. Optimize energy performance – Achieve levels of energy efficiency above Title 24 or local standards as follows (select only one level for this credit):
    1. 10% in new buildings, 5% in existing (2 points)
    2. 20% new, 10% existing (4 points)
    3. 30% new, 20% existing (6 points)
    4. 40% new, 30% existing (8 points)
    5. 50% new, 40% existing (10 points)
  2. Renewable energy on site – Use renewable energy on-site as follows (select one):
    1. Renewable energy for 5% of building’s energy costs (1 point)
    2. Renewable energy for 10% (2 points)
    3. Renewable energy for 20% (3 points)
  3. Additional building commissioning – Implement the following: design review before construction docs phase; construction docs review; review contractor submittals for commissioned equipment; develop recommissioning management manual; have contract for near-warranty end or post occupancy review. Perform first 3 by firm outside design team.
  4. Ozone Depletion – install HVAC&R and fire suppression equipment with no Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) or Halon
  5. Measurement and verification – Comply with the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP) for long term measurement of performance
  6. Green Power – Engage in two year contract to purchase power that meets the Center for Resource Solutions’ (CRS) Green-e certification
