What the City Is Doing

The City of San José has committed to ensuring its buildings are designed and built using Green Building principles. The City of San José encourages building owners, architects, developers, and contractors to incorporate meaningful sustainable building goals early in the building design process. By using the United States Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) Rating System to document those sustainable building features, project teams can publicize their progress. As of July 1, 2002, all City of San José facilities are to be designed to meet the LEED Certified Rating.

The U. S. Green Building Council recognized West Valley Branch Library in San José as the nation's – and the world’s – first "green" library. Read the February 17, 2004 News Release (PDF format, 31 KB).
