Water efficiency means minimal use of potable water from the municipal system. This efficiency provides a dual cost savings by reducing the volume of water used and sewage treated and the power used to transport and heat the water. For more detailed information on LEED requirements, please refer to the USGBC’s LEED Rating System.

  1. Potable water use reduction – Minimize potable water use for landscaping
    1. Use high-efficiency irrigation technology OR rain/recycled water to reduce potable water usage by 50% for landscaping (1 point)
    2. Use only rain/recycled water for 100% of irrigation OR use no irrigation system (1 point)
  2. Innovative wastewater technologies – Reduce potable water used for sewage by >50% OR treat 100% of water on site to tertiary standards (1 point)
  3. Water Use Reduction – Use of recycled/reclaimed water for landscaping
    1. Use 20% less water than water use baseline calculated for the building after meeting the Energy Policy Act of 1992 fixture performance requirement (1 point)
    2. Additional 10% reduction (total 30%) below baseline (1 point)
