Green CertificationYou’ve gone green, and now it’s time to demonstrate and be recognized for your accomplishments. Be Recognized for Your AchievementsThere are several certification programs available to schools that can help you promote your Go Green School. Certification lends legitimacy to your actions and helps garner the support needed to maintain your program over time. Here are three certification options which your school may pursue. Green Star Schools Certification ProgramThis Bay Area-wide certification program is in its pilot phase this year, and San José schools are invited to participate. The program recognizes schools for creating a stronger connection between quality education, the environment, and healthy schools. Emphasis for school greening is placed on policy, education and action, as well as facilities and maintenance. Certification levels include achievement of one, two, or three stars for greening efforts in seven different environmental pathways. The program is currently in a pilot phase. Participation in the pilot is a chance for active schools to be recognized for their “greening” efforts while also helping to shape the future of the certification program. Schools that participate in the pilot certification program can earn their first star by completing checklists issued by the Green Star Program in the areas of energy, waste reduction and recycling, and green schoolyards. Contact SJGreenSchools@sanjoseca.gov and be among the first to earn your star! Green Business CertificationA San José School can be recognized as a Green Business if it:
County of Santa Clara – Green Business Program Green Building CertificationIf you want to take certification a step further, you may want to have your school buildings certified as green buildings. Buildings can be certified for their design and construction and/or for how they are operated and maintained. Begin thinking about green building certification for design and construction when you are considering building a new building or buildings. Certification for operation and maintenance practices can be pursued after buildings have been in operation for at least two years.
