What
Should I do With Unwanted Chemicals When I Move?
When
residents move out are often left with chemicals they don't need. They
don't want to carry these chemicals with them when they move. Frequently
chemicals are disposed of into the trash or some other improper place.
These chemicals threaten the environment or even humans. Improper disposal
is a major cause of water pollution. Always keep all chemicals safely
away from children and pets.
- Go
through your household chemicals to see which ones you will not take
with you on your move. Do this before the last minute hurry of packing
so that you will have time to properly dispose of them.
- Take
any chemicals with you that you can use, like cleaning supplies.
- Ask
your neighbors and friends if they can safely use the chemicals you
do not want.
| If
you still have chemicals to dispose of, go to the Hazardous
Waste Recycling and Disposal web site for Santa Clara County.
This site will give you information about disposal events. These
may be infrequent and you should plan ahead. Or call 299-7300 |
- If
you will not be able to wait for a Household Hazardous Waste drop off
ask a neighbor or friend to do it for you. (They may have unwanted chemicals
also.)
- Again,
plan ahead
If
you see chemicals or liquids being dumped, drained or washed into a
San Jose gutter, street, or storm drain, call
(408) 945-3000 - the storm drain dumping
hot line.
