CLASS PURPOSE
Under immediate supervision, learns to perform work of moderate difficulty operating and monitoring electronic computers and peripheral equipment, running batch jobs and/or test programs, and monitoring on-line usage on the City's computer systems. Performs related work as
require.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Learns to operate medium-scale computer and other computers and peripheral equipment such as disk drives, tape drives, lineprinter, and supervisory console.
- Learns to run batch production jobs and/or test programs following a written schedule.
- Learns to monitor computer consoles and other control equipment to check status of multiple, simultaneously operating systems and/or on-line jobs-in-progress.
- Mounts tapes on tape drives, loads paper and adjusts printer, keys in job control commands on supervisory console keyboard, cleans tape drives, runs back-up tapes, and labels tapes for identification.
- Logs jobs as they are run, records the number and type of print files created, and writes reports of exceptions or problems.
- Follows written and/or oral instructions and standard procedures to accomplish the above.
- Learns to monitor control console to detect job or run exceptions, and follows oral instructions and written procedures to restart or bypass unscheduled stops.
- Receives calls from users concerning the running of their programs and assists them in resolving problems.
- Balances output totals with pre-determined control totals.
- Receives and stores supplies.
- May be required to perform shift work.
- Learns to decollate, burst, and distribute computer output.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry or training level class in the Computer Operator series. Detailed instructions are given at the beginning of the work, and work is usually reviewed or checked upon completion. Incumbents of this class differ from the next higher class of Computer Operator II in that incumbents of the latter function at the fully trained journey level.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of office methods and procedures.
- Knowledge of basic math.
- Ability to learn to operate and monitor electronic computers and related equipment.
- Ability to learn to take appropriate action in correcting machine problems.
- Ability to read and write basic English.
- Ability to follow written, oral, and coded instructions.
- Ability to work with others.
- Ability to type 35 net words per minute.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to operate and monitor electronic computers, run batch and test jobs, and monitor on-line usage under normal operating conditions.
- Ability to detect job run exceptions and take appropriate action.
Education
Graduation from high school or General Education Development (GED) Certificate.
Experience
One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in the operation of computer hardware systems and peripheral equipment with major batch processing functions.
Acceptable Substitutions
Successful completion of one (1) academic year or thirty (30) semester units of college level computer technology courses or related field may be substituted for the work experience requirement. There will be no substitution for the required education.
