COMPUTER OPERATOR II (1333)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under immediate supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty operating
and monitoring electronic computers and peripheral equipment, and running production jobs and/or test programs on the City's computer systems. Performs related work as required.
Operates medium-scale computers and other computer and peripheral equipment such as disk drives, tape drives, lineprinter, and supervisory console.
Runs batch production jobs and test programs, following a written schedule.
Monitors on-line jobs-in-progress.
Monitors computer consoles and other control equipment to check status of multiple, simultaneously operating systems.
Mounts tapes on tape drives, loads paper and adjusts printer, keys job control commands on supervisory console keyboard, cleans tape drives, runs back-up tapes, and labels tapes for identification.
Logs jobs as they are run, records the number and type of print files created, and writes reports of exceptions or problems.
Follows written instructions and standard procedures to accomplish the above.
Monitors job runs on consoles to detect problems and exceptions; diagnoses problems by consulting job documentation or prior run reports, and follows written procedures to restart or bypass machine interruptions, if possible.
Reports equipment failures and problems to superiors and provides information to field engineers.
Receives calls from terminal users concerning the running of their programs and assists them in resolving problems. Provides information to programmers to help resolve problems in test programs.
Balances output totals with pre-determined control totals.
Bursts, decollates and prepares reports for distribution.
Receives and stores supplies.
May be required to perform shift work.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey level class in the Computer Operator series. Incumbents of this class differ from the next higher class of Senior Computer Operator in that they do not have shift lead responsibilities, do less complex diagnostics, and may be supervised by Senior Computer Operator. Incumbents of this class differ from the next lower class of Computer Operator I in that the former are fully trained in the operation of computers and may assist in instructing new operators, while the latter serves in a learning capacity.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the operation of medium scale electronic computer systems, including multiple processing units and peripheral equipment.
Knowledge of office procedures and recordkeeping related to data processing.
Ability to operate and monitor electronic computers and related equipment.
Ability to run production jobs and test programs as scheduled.
Ability to identify and document job run problems, and to take appropriate action to correct machine problems.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work with others to resolve data processing problems.
Ability to type 35 net words per minute.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of diagnostic techniques required to determine the cause of data processing interruptions.
Ability to read and understand job control language.
