PROCESS AND SYSTEMS
SPECIALIST I (1361)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs programming
and related work of routine difficulty at the introductory level
in supporting the operation of the on-line/off-line real time
direct digital control computer system used for control and/or
study of water pollution control processes. Performs related work
as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS
(Any one
position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the
examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Operates a process control computer system
with either machine in on-line or off-line mode.
- Attends on-the-job training classes to
gain additional skills and understanding of process
control and programming applications.
- Creates, modifies, and debugs programs to
meet system requirements by employing FORTRAN,
"C", or other equivalent third generation
computer programming languages.
- Identifies process control and system
problems by using hardware and software diagnostic
programs.
- Meets with operators and contractors
regarding process control problems as necessary.
- Verifies nature of process control and
system malfunctions and either corrects them or provides
information required to effect repairs.
- Develops and maintains system
documentation, including tape library. Acquires and
maintains the computer spare equipment storage and
security.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry-level position in the Process
and Systems Specialist series. At this level an incumbent is
introduced to process control computer system complexes and
develops the ability and knowledge to perform the typical duties
itemized above. This entry-level class assists the next higher
class of Process and Systems Specialist II and is supervised by a
Senior Process and Systems Specialist.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of principles and practices of
computer programming.
- Knowledge of at least one of the following
computer programming languages: FORTRAN, "C",
or an equivalent third generation computer language.
- Knowledge of and ability to use algebraic
techniques.
- Ability to learn the principles and
practices of wastewater treatment.
- Ability to learn and use process control
computer system.
- Ability to learn and use specialized
computer system programming packages.
- Ability to use and perform computer
programming and EDP systems analytical work of routine
difficulty; think logically; follow detailed instruction;
and apply computer programming principles in the analysis
of the system.
- Ability to write computer programs of
average difficulty in at least one language.
- Ability to solve problems in a logical
manner.
- Ability to organize projects and
understand project goals, and employ time management
effectively.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both
orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with other personnel.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of VAX, VMS operating system for
use in process control data management.
- Knowledge of the current principles and
practices of computer programming.
- Knowledge of the principles of wastewater
treatment.
- Knowledge of process control and most
phases of computer control employed by the Water
Pollution Control Department.
- Ability to use most computer systems and
software packages employed by the Water Pollution Control
Department.
- Ability to write computer programs of
average difficulty in all languages used currently.
- Ability to understand and solve most
control system problems.
- Ability to establish and maintain
effective working relations with contractors.
Education
Successful completion of a Bachelor's Degree
from an accredited college or university in Computer Science,
Industrial or Chemical Engineering, Physical Science, or a
closely related field.
Experience
One (1) year experience in software/hardware
technical support, computer programming and/or networking.
