GEOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS SPECIALIST I (1381)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under immediate supervision, performs work of routine difficulty at the entry level in the utilization of geographic information systems, or the utilization of the computerized traffic forecast model. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Operates and maintains various types of geographic information system workstations, including digitizers, plotters, and microcomputers.
- Develops and/or modifies geographic information or forecast modeling application software and related subsystem application software.
- Maintains the computerized traffic forecast model network database and documents significant changes to this database.
- Interprets recorded plans to enter graphic and attribute data into the geographic information system.
- Identifies system problems by employing hardware and software diagnostic utilities and methodologies.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level in the Geographic Systems Specialist series. The incumbent of this class is introduced to complex computer system applications and develops the knowledge and ability required to perform routine duties independently. This class differs from that of Geographic Systems Specialist II in that an incumbent of the latter has acquired the skills to perform technical geographic systems work of moderate difficulty under general supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, and analytic geometry.
- Ability to think logically and follow detailed instructions.
- Ability to solve problems in a logical manner.
- Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and effective manner.
- Ability to learn and use specialized computer system application software.Ability to learn the principles and practices of geographic information or computerized forecast modeling.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of geographic information systems.
- Knowledge of computerized traffic forecast modeling.
- Ability to assess and understand user needs and to develop the necessary software and/or reports to meet those needs.
- Ability to use specific computer systems and software packages required for the job.
Education
A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Physical Science, Geography, Urban Planning, or a closely related field.
Experience
No minimum requirement.
Acceptable Substitutions
Additional years of directly related work experience may be substituted for up to a maximum of two (2) years of the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
