MANAGER OF CORPORATE OUTREACH (1997)

CLASS PURPOSE

   Under general direction, performs work of considerable difficulty managing the Corporate Outreach and Business Cooperation Programs to increase sales tax revenues and facilitate the retention, expansion and attraction of businesses. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)

Typical End Results:

   Effective and productive implementation of the Office of Economic Development’s Business Cooperation Program which involves working with companies (primarily high-tech) to self-accrue the use tax paid on the purchase of out-of-state equipment. This results in the City of San Jose receiving the entire 1% use tax paid on the purchase of out-of-state equipment.

   Significant increase in sales tax revenues as a result of companies self-accruing use tax, increased "point of sale" locations, new retail uses, and locating unreported sales tax; development of positive relationships with an increased number of major companies in the city; increased number of jobs and investments in San Jose leading to more tax revenue; increased private sector use of services such as location assistance, marketing support and collateral.

Distinguishing Characteristics

   An incumbent in this single position classification serves as an ombudsman in the Office of Economic Development with the goal of proactively working with companies to increase sales tax revenues and help facilitate the retention, expansion and attraction of businesses and corporations. An incumbent in this class reports to the Director or Assistant Director of Economic Development.

Training and Experience

   Any combination of training and experience equivalent to successful completion of a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, accounting, economics, urban planning, marketing or a related field and six (6) increasingly responsible professional years of government, consulting, corporate or real estate experience in corporate investment and development strategies and analysis.
