POLICE SERGEANT (2216)

CLASS PURPOSE

Under direction, performs police work of moderate difficulty in preventing crime, investigating criminal offenses, or in supervising specific police unit programs. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)

Performs duty as a detective including supervision of officer level

investigators, or as supervisor of beat patrol work, Motorcycle Sergeant, shifts in Operations Support unit, and/or such programs as School Traffic Safety, as vehicular accident investigator, or investigating complaints against department members.

Supervises a district.

Prepares and presents speeches to various civic groups.

As supervisor, responsible for the safety of assigned personnel; assigning work for and instructing, inspecting, and evaluating these personnel on the job. Provides direct personal supervision in complex situations, criminal and traffic investigations, in photographing, fingerprinting, warrant and property unit functions.

Trains personnel in required processing, gathering of evidence, preparation for court trials and procedures, and interrogation and apprehension of suspects.

Supervises school safety patrols consisting of adult and student guards.

Coordinates with school authorities in supervising student guards.

As a Detective or Supervising Detective, performs follow-up investigations of crime, criminals and crime-causing situations usually in a specified category, such as burglary, robbery, homicide or fraud. Enforces specialized laws to prevent and eradicate vice and narcotics. Questions victims, witnesses and suspects to obtain testimony and evidence.

As a Detective Sergeant duties may also include, concentrating on preventing and investigating crime involving juveniles and on eliminating conditions conducive to juvenile delinquency. Coordinates with other agencies and authorities in processing cases, makes recommendations as to disposition of juvenile offenders, presents cases in court. Maintains case histories of information gathered through questioning, interviewing, and other processes.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Incumbents report to a Police Lieutenant or higher ranking officer.

Police Sergeant work is at a level of difficulty above Police Officer, and may also on occasion include responsibility for administrative planning and programming found in the class of Police Lieutenant.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:

The principles and practices of supervision and training;
The principles, practices and procedures of police science and administration;
General social problems and their causes in urban centers, including juvenile behavior and delinquency, and resources available to assist in eliminating conditions conducive to crime;
State and city traffic laws, regulations, and procedures, the rules and regulations of the San Jose Police Department, major street system and population concentrations in San Jose;
The principles, practices, methods and problems of criminal investigation including interrogation, interviewing, testimony, identification, and evidence and elements of crimes;
Criminal law with reference to apprehension, arrest, and prosecution of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies, including rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure, preparation and presentation of evidence pertaining to search and seizure in criminal cases, and elements of misdemeanor and felony cases;
Police radio communications systems and operating equipment.

Skill in:

Use of firearms.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of two (2) years of college (60 semester units) and three (3) years of experience as a Police Officer with the City of San Jose.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES

Possession of a Basic Peace Officers Standard and Training Certificate.
Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor

vehicle in the State of California.

As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
