MAINTENANCE WORKER I (3113)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under immediate supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers and public facilities. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks such as cleaning catch basins and plugged sewers; repairing and unplugging sewer laterals, mains and storm drains; repairing and replacing water lines; repairing and patching street surfaces; and installing and repairing chain-link fences.
- Drives and operates pickup trucks, dump trucks, light flatbed trucks, chippers, forklifts, mowers and related light vehicles.
- Uses tools such as air spades, tampers, picks, shovels, hoes, rakes, pruning shears and loppers.
- Uses general carpentry, mechanical and hand tools such as power saws, hand saws, drills, pliers, wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, ladders and other tools and equipment.
- Sprays trees and weeds; aerates lawns.
- Installs and repairs sprinkler lines and irrigation systems.
- Performs semi-skilled tasks in making and installing steel gutter brooms.
- Performs minor semi-skilled carpentry and plumbing repair work.
- May perform welding, cutting, drilling and repairing of metal fixtures and equipment.
- May assist with traffic control.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in this class perform a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers and public facilities. This class differs from that of Maintenance Assistant in that the latter performs unskilled laboring tasks. This class differs from that of Maintenance
Worker II in that the latter exercises lead direction over a small crew while performing skilled and semi-skilled work.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the use and care of common tools used in street, sewer, and public facilities maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of safety practices and precautions to be used in work.
- Knowledge of equipment operation safety.
- Knowledge of simple preventive maintenance procedures.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
- Ability to read, write and understand English.
- Ability to lift weights of 20-100 pounds.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of safety rules in handling herbicides.
- Knowledge of cutting torch operation.
- Ability to make simple measurements.
- Ability to read simple diagrams.
- Ability to operate mobile radio communications equipment.
- Ability to deal with the public.
Training And Experience
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of high school or possession of a General Educational Development (GED) certificate and one (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, parks and public facilities.
Licenses/Certificates
As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
