MAINTENANCE WORKER II (3114)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in providing lead direction to small crews engaged in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, and public facilities. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Provides lead direction in the performance of a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks such as cleaning catch basins and plugged sewers; repairing and unplugging sewer laterals, mains and storm drains; repairing and replacing water lines, repairing and patching street surfaces; and installing and repairing chain-link fences; monitoring and maintaining storm and sanitary lift stations.
- Performs maintenance work in the upkeep of Airport facilities including automatic doors, waste disposal unit, baggage areas, hangars, terminal buildings, grounds, runways, taxiways, lighting system, rolling equipment, and other items.
- Assists skilled crafts workers in electrical and painting work and repairs.
- Performs carpentry work including stencils for painters, construction and repair of barricades, installation of metal and wood additions, fabrication of wheel chocks, and other items.
- Drives and operates vehicles such as pickup trucks, water tank trucks, trucks with hoists, boom trucks, diesel trucks, combination vacuum/high pressure trucks, rollers less than eight (8) tons, trenchers, forklifts, mowers, and other equipment.
- Uses tools such as air spades, tampers, picks, shovels, hoes, rakes, pruning shears and loppers.
- Uses general carpentry, mechanical and hand tools such as chain saws and other various saws, drills, shapers, jointers, routers, grinders, pliers, wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, ladders and other tools and equipment.
- Sprays trees and weeds, aerates lawns.
- Installs and repairs sprinkler lines and irrigation systems.
- Performs semi-skilled tasks in the making and installing of steel gutter brooms and fiber rear brooms.
- Performs minor semi-skilled carpentry, plumbing and electrical repair work.
- May perform welding, cutting, drilling and repairing of metal fixtures and equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in this class lead a crew and/or perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, and public facilities. This class differs from Maintenance Worker I in that the latter performs semi-skilled work. This class differs from Senior Maintenance Worker in that the latter supervises and provides lead direction over larger numbers of personnel and crews and has a broader work assignment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the general materials, methods, tools and equipment used in street sewer and public facility maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of the safe operation of motor vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of the safety practices and precautions to be taken in work.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures.
- Ability to lead and direct the activities of a crew.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
- Ability to lift heavy weights, 20 - 100 pounds.
- Ability to keep simple records and prepare routine reports.
- Ability to make simple measurements.
- Ability to deal tactfully with the public.
Competency Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of safety rules in handling herbicides.
- Knowledge of cutting torch operation.
- Knowledge of shoring methods and principles.
- Knowledge of pumps and pump mechanisms.
- Knowledge of Airport rules and procedures regarding safe conduct in the restricted flight areas of the Airport.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
- Ability to provide lead direction.
- Ability to train and direct subordinate personnel.
- Ability to use radio equipment while working in FAA restricted flight areas.
- Ability to perform a variety of work of moderate difficulty in the maintenance of Airport facilities and associated grounds.
Education
Completion of high school, General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.
Experience
Three (3) years experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, parks or public facilities, or related field.

Licenses/Certificates
- Possession of a valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle.
- As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
