SENIOR MAINTENANCE WORKER (3115)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate
difficulty in supervising and providing direction to
moderate-to-large crews engaged in semi-skilled and skilled work
in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, parks, and
public facilities. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not
include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the
duties which may be performed.)
- Supervises, provides lead direction, and participates in
the repair, maintenance, and reconstruction of streets,
roadways, storm and sanitary mains, laterals and inlets,
water lines, and storm and sanitary sewers.
- Supervises, provides lead direction, and participates in
painting traffic directional signs or symbols such as
crosswalks, safety loading zones, bus stops, parking and
center lines, barricades, and guard rails.
- Supervises, provides lead direction, and participates in
the accomplishment of projects in parks and recreation
areas such as the construction of chain link fencing,
trails, fire breaks, steps and footbridges, landscaping,
and seeding and planting areas.
- Supervises and provides lead direction in the operation
and utilization of trucks, trenchers, front-end loaders,
digging tractors, spray painting equipment, fork lifts,
power mowers, compressors, jack hammers, tar kettles,
power augers, arc and gas welders, and common shop
machines and hand tools such as drill presses, power
saws, grinders, belt sanders, and electrical metal saws.
- Directs and participates in the setting of barricades and
other safety precautions for the diversion of traffic
around work sites on city streets and work areas, park
access areas, and park and recreation areas.
- Directs and participates in operation and maintenance of
irrigation systems on streets and road right-of-way,
including median islands, backup properties, walkways,
underpasses, overpasses, grounds and turf areas, and park
areas.
- Directs and participates in inventory and control of
supplies, spare parts, and equipment for use in work
area.
- Directs and participates in training and developing
employee skills, and assists in evaluating assigned
crews.
- Plans, schedules, and assigns work based on work requests
and the results of facility inspections, and requisitions
materials for work completion.
- May supervise and provide lead direction in fire
suppression control work.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class differs from that of Maintenance Worker II in that
incumbents of the latter lead smaller crews and often receive
guidance from a Senior Maintenance Worker. This class differs
from higher maintenance supervisor classes in that the incumbents
receive supervision from those classes.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the materials, methods, tools, and equipment
used in street, sewer, park, and public facility
maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of the safe operation of motor vehicles and
equipment.
- Knowledge of workplace safety practices and precautions.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.
- Knowledge of safety rules in using herbicides,
pesticides, insecticides, and other chemicals.
- Ability to read and interpret sketches, plans,
blueprints, and diagrams.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to estimate and order materials necessary for
work completion.
- Ability to perform arithmetic calculations and to make
simple measurements.
- Ability to prepare reports and keep records of work
completed, time spent, and parts, supplies, and materials
used.
- Ability to deal with the public.
- Ability to lift heavy weights of 20-100 pounds.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to operate mobile radio communications equipment.
- General knowledge of organizational principles, such as
Organizational Development, Continuous Improvement, or
Total Quality Management.
Education
Graduation from high school, or General Educational
Development (GED) Certificate, or California Proficiency
Certificate.
Experience
Four (4) years experience in the maintenance and repair of
streets, sewers, parks, street landscaping, or public facilities,
including at least one (1) year in a lead capacity at a level
such as Maintenance Worker II, Gardener, Parks Maintenance Repair
Worker II, Facility Worker I or Athletic Stadium Groundskeeper
with the City of San Jose.
Acceptable Substitutions
Cumulative "chitted up" experience from a lower
class to lead capacity at a level such as Maintenance Worker II,
Gardener, Parks Maintenance Repair Worker II, Facility Worker I,
or Athletic Stadium Groundskeeper with the City of San Jose may
be substituted on a year-for-year basis (2080 hours = 1 year).
Licenses/Certificates
As a condition of employment in some designated positions,
possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's
license with applicable endorsements may be required in the
performance of job duties.
