CARPENTER (3133)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision performs skilled journey-level carpentry work of moderate difficulty. Perform related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Performs skilled rough and finish carpentry work in the alteration, maintenance, restoration, and repair of buildings, floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens, scaffolding forms, wood fixtures, furniture, and other objects.
Performs skilled mill and cabinet work involving construction, finishing, restoration, and repairing of buildings, structures, furniture, cabinets, equipment and other objects.
Operates band saws, planers, joiners, shapers, table saws, wood lathes, drill presses, sanding machines, routers, electric drills, and other portable and stationary hand and electric tools.
May hang doors and door checks, cut and install windows panes.
May install, repair, and replace locks, re-key locks, make keys and master keys.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey-level class in the carpenter series. This class differs from that of Senior Carpenter in that the latter is responsible for lead supervision over a crew of journey-level carpenters and other employees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the carpentry trade.
Knowledge of building codes pertaining to carpentry.
Ability to effectively use the tools, materials, and equipment of the carpentry trade.
Ability to work from blueprints, sketches, oral and written instructions.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of training principles and techniques.
Ability to inspect lumber for grade and quality.
Ability to train apprentice carpenters and other employees.
Training and Experience
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to successful completion of a recognized carpentry apprenticeship program.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California.
