CLASS PURPOSE
Under immediate supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in the cleaning, maintenance and upkeep of City offices, buildings and facilities. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties
listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Sweeps, mops, washes and polishes floors using chemicals and detergents.
Cleans doors, walls, windows, and mirrors.
Cleans and vacuums carpets.
Empties trash cans and ash trays.
Cleans restrooms and replenishes restroom supplies.
Replaces light bulbs, florescent tubes and diffusers.
Dusts furniture, equipment and other objects.
Provides general information to the public such as room location, airport terminal office, etc.
Washes, shampoos and steam cleans carpets.
Turns off lights and locks and unlocks doors and windows.
Sets up a room or an area for special events.
Performs minor and/or routine maintenance on equipment used on the job, such as replacing broken belts on a vacuum cleaner.
Moves furniture, equipment and other objects.
May assist with crowd control in assigned work area.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class in the custodian series. Incumbents perform work under the general supervision of Senior Custodians or higher level supervisory staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of cleaning equipment, and tools.
Knowledge of cleaning methods.
Knowledge of safety practices in custodian work.
Ability to safely lift and operate heavy pieces of equipment such as waxers, buffers and vacuum clearners.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of cleaning products.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public, co-workers and supervisors.
Ability to follow safety practices and procedures.
Ability to learn proper cleaning procedures and methods.
Training And Experience
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of the eight grade.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid State of California driver's license may be required.
