CUSTODIAL SUPERVISOR (3216)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty supervising custodial services in public facilities. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Compiles master work schedules.
Monitors maintenance levels through periodic inspections.
Completes work orders for repairs to equipment that is forwarded to maintenance sections.
Orders supplies, maintains and controls supply inventories, and processes requisition forms.
Consults with managers and other City personnel for maintenance needs.
Responsible for safe work performance, safe equipment, and facility safety.
Makes budget recommendations for supplies, materials, equipment, and staffing needs.
Plans, assigns, and inspects work performed by subordinates.
Evaluates work performance of subordinates.
Trains employees.
Counsels lead workers and other subordinates.
Processes grievances and completes performance appraisals.
Initiates appropriate disciplinary actions.
Signs time sheets and distributes time cards.
Interviews candidates and makes recommendations for hiring.
Writes memos, reports, and other correspondence.
TYPICAL END RESULTS INCLUDE
Ensuring that public and private facilities are maintained in a clean, presentable, attractive, and safe condition.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in this class are responsible for the implementation of effective and economical custodial schedules and procedures, and for the supervision of Senior Custodians and lower level staff. This class differs from other management and supervisory classes in that responsibility is limited to custodial maintenance at specified major facility sites.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, and methods used in custodial maintenance.
Knowledge of training and supervisory methods and techniques.
Knowledge of computer of computer systems, hardware and software used in government agencies.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to plan, schedule, and assign work.
Ability to set priorities.
Ability to write reports and maintain records.
Ability to maintain effective work relationships with subordinates, co-workers, supervisors, tenants, and the public.
Ability to effectively communicate with subordinates, supervisors, airport tenants, contractors, and the public.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures regarding ordering supplies, materials, and equipment.
Ability to effectively evaluate staff performance and behavior and initiate corrective actions where necessary.
Ability to use computer systems, hardware and software found in the City of San Jose.
Skilled in problem-solving.
Education
Graduation from high school or General Education Development (GED) certificate.
Experience
Four (4) years of experience supervising or leading a crew of skilled or semi-skilled employees.
Acceptable Substitutions
Two (2) years of college can substitute for a maximum of two (2) years of the required four (4) years experience supervising or leading work crews.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid State of California driver's license.
