AIRPORT MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR (3244)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty supervising crews of workers in the maintenance and repair of Airport facilities, equipment and associated grounds. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Plans and supervises the preventive maintenance program.
Receives work requests; reviews and assigns work to maintenance crews.
Inspects the Airport facilities and associated grounds; prepares work requests; assigns work and follows-up to ensure completion.
Ensures that appropriate materials are ordered and available to complete required maintenance and repair.
Supervises Airport Maintenance Workers and other assigned personnel.
Takes over responsibility for the Airport maintenance program in the absence of the Airport Maintenance Superintendent.
Contacts and works very closely with vendors, Purchasing Department, Public Works Department, and Lessees of Airport space.
Ensures the maintenance and repair of runways, taxiways, aprons, and run-up aprons and surrounding field areas.
Inspects runways and taxiways for hazardous conditions.
Supervises replacement and repair of all field lights, and supervises weed control program.
Supervises installation and replacement of aircraft tie-down materials.
Ensures the marking of runways and hangars, and other painting including painting of the terminal buildings.
Oversees the grounds maintenance activity for the airport including routine gardening, some new landscaping, and routine watering, weeding and necessary power sweeping.
Supervises building maintenance work.
Ensures maintenance of inventories of parts and supplies necessary to conduct the building maintenance, field maintenance, custodial and grounds maintenance programs.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class is the third level in a three class Airport Maintenance series. Incumbents supervise a group of Airport Maintenance Workers and other assigned personnel in the maintenance and repair of Airport facilities and associated grounds, under the general supervision of the Building Maintenance Superintendent. This class differs from the next higher level class of Building Maintenance Superintendent in the scope of responsibility, and incumbents are supervised by the incumbent of the latter. This class differs from the next lower class of Airport Maintenance Worker II in that incumbents in that class are supervised by Airport Maintenance Supervisors.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in airport maintenance work.
Knowledge of safety and operational practices of an airport.
Knowledge of Federal, State and local rules and regulations affecting airport operations. Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to deal tactfully with the public, vendors and Airport leasees.
Ability to keep simple records and prepare routine reports.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge and ability to use radio equipment while working in controlled areas.
Knowledge of City purchasing process.
Knowledge of which local vendors and suppliers carry materials requisite for the maintenance program.
Ability to supervise, train and direct subordinate personnel.
Ability to take responsibility for the airport maintenance program in the absence of the Airport Maintenance Superintendent.
Ability to plan work, schedule, analyze workloads and work units in order to improve methods and utilization of personnel.
Ability to identify general maintenance problems typically encountered and make necessary plans for corrective actions.
Special Airport Requirement
This Airport specific classification requires each candidate to satisfactorily complete a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 10-year employment history verification which may include a criminal history records check prior to being considered for a position in this class.
Training and Experience
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of high school, including or supplemented by additional training in mechanical, building or airport maintenance trades, and four (4) years of experience in building or public works maintenance which included two (2) years supervision or lead direction experience in a large facility at the level of a Maintenance Worker II or higher.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid California driver's license. An FCC Class III operator's license must be obtained within a reasonable time after employment.
