EQUIPMENT MECHANIC ASSISTANT II (3312)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty or leads in the inspection, servicing, and minor repairing of automotive equipment and construction equipment, and under the supervision of an Equipment Mechanic, performs more advanced repairs and servicing. Performs other related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties
listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Determines priority for maintenance and repairs.
- Performs and leads others in scheduled servicing of vehicles and equipment retained in City inventory.
- Ensures completion of servicing assignments and checks records to ensure that all servicing is recorded accurately.
- Performs simple mechanical repairs under the guidance of an Equipment Mechanic, such as tune-ups and brake adjustment and servicing. Replaces and adjusts minor mechanical units and parts and makes minor repairs that do not require a Mechanic.
- Performs the safety inspection of automotive equipment and for damage to frames, cabs, and glass, and schedules equipment for repair.
- Inspects gas and diesel engines and related components; repairs pneumatic and hydraulically operated tools and components.
- Inspects and replaces pollution control devices and inspects drive trains for proper oil levels and contaminants on automotive equipment.
- Repairs, replaces and adjusts tires, and makes road calls for emergency servicing.
- Checks brakes, steering, shock absorbers, batteries, and other parts and systems, and the packing of wheel bearings.
- Maintains inventory of tires and other supplies.
- Assists other classifications and learns fundamentals of automotive electrical installation, welding, metal fabrication and machining.
- Performs field maintenance on automotive equipment.
- Leads, schedules, assigns, and trains other employees in some assignments.
- Performs the lubrication, adjustment, minor repair, and replacement of components in parking meters, and maintains records on parking meter operations.
- Operates computer terminal to enter data and check records related to vehicle maintenance and parts.
- Maintains records, including vehicle location logs, parts supply inventories, work orders and related vehicle maintenance and garage records.
- Pick up, deliver and issue automotive truck parts as needed
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class differs from that of Equipment Mechanic Assistant I in that incumbents of this class act as lead to incumbents of the latter class, perform more advanced repair or inspection duties or perform specialized repair or installation functions. This class differs from that of Equipment Service Supervisor in that incumbents of the latter have a broader work assignment and a supervisory responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in servicing and maintaining automotive equipment.
- Knowledge of methods and materials used in cleaning automotive equipment.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures to be observed in work.
- Skill in using mechanic's tools and lubricating equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to recognize conditions in automotive equipment which need repair, adjustment or replacement, and to remove the vehicle from service.
- Ability to keep required records, and to schedule equipment for servicing.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of simple mechanical repairs.
- Ability to follow written manuals.
- Ability to train and lead other employees.
- Ability to obtain a City driving permit.
Training and Experience
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of
the tenth grade and two years experience in the lubrication and servicing of
automotive equipment which involved the maintenance of parts and supply inventories, and the maintenance of service records.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid California driver's license at all times is a condition of employment at all times is a condition of employment.
As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
