SENIOR MECHANIC (3322)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work
of moderate difficulty providing lead direction to Mechanics and
Apprentice Mechanics and other staff engaged in skilled and
semi-skilled repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any
one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the
examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Provides lead direction and
participates in the repair of a variety of City-owned
vehicles including automobiles, motorcycles, trucks,
street sweepers, wheel and track tractors, air
compressors, firefighting apparatus, high pressure fire
pumps, and other special equipment.
- Supervises, trains and provides lead
direction to Apprentice Mechanics and Equipment Mechanic
Assistants in the repair and maintenance of mechanized
equipment.
- Provides technical diagnostic
assistance in troubleshooting difficult installation,
modification, maintenance and repair conditions.
- Leads and performs necessary
repairs, including complete overhauls of gasoline and
diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions,
differentials, drive lines, universal joints, electrical,
hydraulic and air brake systems, air conditioning
systems, frames, suspensions and alignments, diesel and
gasoline fuel systems and carburetor, generators and
alternators, power and manual steering gear systems, and
tune-ups on both gasoline and diesel engines.
- Performs preventive maintenance
repair and modification work on specialized accessories
and rescue equipment, including hydraulic systems and
emergency lighting systems, specialized Public Works and
Park Department equipment and vehicles, and other on-site
special vehicles and equipment.
- Performs gas and arc-welding
functions for minor vehicle operational repairs.
- Leads and performs advanced
mechanical repairs, maintenance and modifications to
special equipment, automotive and heavy equipment.
- Trains others in the utilization of
testing equipment, including electronic and standard
ignition testers, dynamoneter and analyzing scopes used
in troubleshooting maintenance and repair work.
- May establish priorities for work
performed, may assign work.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class differs from that of Mechanic
in that incumbents of the former provide technical assistance on
the most difficult repair conditions and provide lead direction
to the latter and lower classes performing repair and
maintenance. This class differs from the class of Equipment
Maintenance Supervisor in that the latter has full supervisory
responsibility over one or more repair sites.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and
Abilities
- Knowledge of servicing and repair
technology related to a wide variety of motorized
vehicles and equipment including gasoline and diesel
engines.
- Knowledge of the functions and
capacities of various parts and equipment.
- Knowledge of State vehicle
inspection standards.
- Knowledge of repair shop safety
standards and precautions.
- Ability to read and interpret
manufacturers' operating and service manuals.
- Ability to read and interpret blue
prints.
- Ability to utilize a wide variety of
test equipment in troubleshooting maintenance and repair
conditions.
- Ability to diagnose and repair
difficult mechanical malfunctions in a wide variety of
equipment and vehicles including the major overhaul of
gasoline and diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to set priorities.
- Ability to train and lead others in
servicing, repair and maintenance of vehicles and
specialized equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain
effective working relations with others.
Competency Knowledge, Skills and
Abilities
- Knowledge of City policies relating to
servicing and repair of assigned equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to schedule, assign and evaluate
the work performed by other employees.
Education
Completion of high school, General
Educational Development (GED), or California Profiencey
Certificate.
Experience
Three (3) years as a journey level
Mechanic.

None
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid State of California
driver's license at all times is a condition of employment.
Possession of a valid smog, brake and
lamp certificate from the State of California. As a condition of
employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid
State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable
endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
