EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR (3327)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under direction, performs supervisory work of considerable difficulty in the repair of mechanized equipment, the inspection, repair, and installation of special automotive equipment, in the fabrication, modification, and welding of equipment and vehicles, and in monitoring outside contracts. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Manages a preventative maintenance program.
- Consults with City personnel, outside vendors, and others. Evaluates and sets priorities for work to be performed. Schedules, assigns, and evaluates work performed. Ensures the scheduling of work completion with a minimum of down time.
- Reviews and documents the performance of outside vendors.
- Purchases tools, parts, equipment, and supplies through purchasing department and directly from vendors.
- Maintains adequate inventories of tools, parts, supplies, and equipment.
- Initiates and completes work orders.
- Maintains records of labor, equipment, materials, supplies and parts used and their cost for budget input.
- Provides cost and inventory statistics and data for budget use.
- Assigns certain vehicles and equipment to outside vendors for repair.
- Ensures compliance with safety standards, and regulations in installation, modification, and repair work and in employee work sites.
- Conducts safety workshops with subordinate staff.
Typical End Results Include
Ensuring that City equipment, vehicles and heavy equipment is serviced, repaired, inspected, modified and maintained in a safe, useful condition; ensuring the safety of work sites; ensuring that employees observe safety rules, regulations and procedures; ensuring that work performed by outside vendors is complete, timely, cost-effective and efficient.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in this class are responsible for the supervision of employees engaged in the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of special equipment, automotive equipment, and heavy equipment and in monitoring contracts with outside vendors. Incumbents in this class are supervised by the Fleet Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of repairs of mechanized equipment.
- Knowledge of safety laws, rules, practices and precautions for vehicles, equipment, and employees engaged in installations, modification, and repair.
- Knowledge of industry standards and practices as they relate to fleet management.
- Knowledge of local government budgeting process.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of effective management and supervision.
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret manufacturers' operating and service manuals.
- Ability to supervise, train and evaluate staff.
- Ability to purchase, maintain, and control adequate inventories of supplies, equipment, parts and tools.
Competency Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of welding, fabrication, and machine work.
- Knowledge of labor rates, parts, and material costs.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
- Ability to obtain a City driving permit.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and small contracts.
- Ability to write reports and to interpret automotive specifications and comprehensive reports.
- Ability to work under stress and prioritize work flow.
- Ability to use computers in entering and accessing data, including basic computer operations in Windows 95.
- Ability to manage a section budget.
Education
Completion of high school, General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.
Experience
Four (4) years experience in journey-level automotive and heavy equipment repair, machining, or metalworking.
Acceptable Substitutions
For both education and experience requirements, these are the acceptable substitutions:
- An Associate Degree in vehicle repair/maintenance field or Business Administration and two years journey-level experience in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair, or
- Bachelor Degree in vehicle repair/maintenance field or Business Administration and two years general experience in large automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair operation.
Licenses/Certificates
- Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in California.
- As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
