ASSISTANT FIRE MASTER MECHANIC (3332)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, supervises, coordinates and may perform skilled
journey level mechanic work
in the repair and maintenance of firefighting apparatus and equipment. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Supervises, coordinates and may perform a variety of gas/diesel mechanical maintenance, repair and fabrication work on firefighting apparatus and equipment.
Makes recommendations on whether to rebuild or replace equipment; recommends vendors to be used in obtaining parts on open purchase orders; prepares preliminary specifications for equipment subject to the bidding process.
Makes work assignments to subordinate equipment mechanics, service workers and auto parts personnel; oversees the completion of work assigned.
Supervises the completion of scheduled preventative equipment maintenance work.
Compiles input on equipment costs for budget preparation and work completion data for annual reports and related reports.
Answers emergency calls to repair equipment in case of breakdowns/accidents. May prepare reports on major accidents. Is on-call for emergency duties at major/greater alarm fires.
Instructs others in proper equipment operation and maintenance.
Maintains records and makes reports.
Acts in the absence of the Master Mechanic.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a single position class reporting to the Fire Master Mechanic and supervising
journey level
mechanics, equipment service workers and auto parts personnel in the completion of repair and maintenance work
on assigned firefighting apparatus and equipment work. This class differs from the next higher class in terms
of overall responsibility and from the lower class of Light/Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic in relation to
supervisory responsibility exercised.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of firefighting apparatus and equipment repair principles and practices.
Knowledge of supervisory methods and procedures and processes.
Knowledge of gasoline/diesel engine operation/maintenance and repair.
Knowledge of hydraulic systems.
Knowledge, skills and ability to formulate scheduling of preventive maintenance for the fire department vehicles.
Ability to perform and supervise skilled journey level mechanical maintenance and repair work.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions in the mechanical trades.
Ability to prepare equipment specifications.
Ability to compile data for budget and report preparation.
Ability to instruct others in proper equipment operation and maintenance.
Training And Experience
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to successful completion of an equipment
mechanical apprenticeship program and three (3) years of journey level automotive equipment mechanic
experience, including at least one (1) year as a lead, supervisor or manager.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid California Class A driver's license with applicable endorsements is required.
