EQUIPMENT OPERATOR (3341)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in
operating light to moderately heavy motorized construction and maintenance equipment for the City’s parks maintenance program. Performs related work
as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Operates tractors with backhoe, front-end loader, auger and other power attachments, for loading digging holes, trenches, leveling, weed cutting and related functions.
Transports light equipment to work locations using truck and trailer combinations.
Operates gasoline or diesel powered rotary and/or gang mowers on assigned routes to maintain turf in city parks.
Drives hydraulic powered refuse collection trucks on assigned refuse pick-up routes within the City park system.
Operates tractors with power attachments forklifts and related equipment.
Does minor repair and servicing of assigned equipment in the field.
Maintains mileage, route, work activity and related records; may maintain refuse bin inventories; make accident and other required reports.
Operates moderate-sized street sweeping equipment on a periodic basis.
May provide lead guidance to assigned personnel.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class differs from other equipment operator classes in terms of the
type of equipment operated The class is unique in its responsibility for operating a variety of equipment used in parks and airport maintenance.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the operation of light equipment, including tractors with power attachments, truck/trailer combinations.
Knowledge of rotary/gang mowers, pavement and turf sweepers, hydraulic-powered refuse collection trucks and related equipment.
Knowledge of minor equipment repair and adjustment.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to utilize light equipment in mowing, sweeping, refuse collection and related applications.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
Ability to maintain adequate records and reports.
Education
Completion of high school, possession of a G.E.D. certificate or California Proficiency Certificate.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in operating and maintaining the mechanized
equipment used in the City’s parks maintenance program such as tractors, backhoes, power augers, gang/rotary mowers and front-end loaders.
Acceptable Substitution
None.
Licenses/Certificates
As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a
valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
