SENIOR TREE MAINTENANCE LEADWORKER (3405)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty in
supervising and providing direction to moderate to large crews engaged in highly skilled tree trimming and removal work. Performs related work as
required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Supervises and provides lead direction and participates in a variety of clearance trimming, tree removal, and related duties which include stripping and topping trees for removal; lowering trees and limbs; utilizing rigging as needed; removing falling trees, limbs or traffic hazards; inspecting trees to determine need for pruning, trimming or removal and for evidence of insects or disease.
Supervises and provides lead direction in the operation and utilization of all equipment used in the tree section boom trucks, chipper trucks, chippers, chain saws, all hand tools, log splitter, grinders, belt sanders, blowers, splice chain for saws, and makes fine adjustments on chain saws.
Supervises, provides lead direction and participate in the accomplishments of special projects for other departments, City arborist, sewer crew, Parks Department, landscape, slurry seal, and chip seal.
Supervises and participates in the setting of barricades and other safety precautions for the diversion of traffic and pedestrians around work areas in City streets.
Supervises and participates in inventory and control of supplies, spare parts, and equipment for use in work areas.
Supervises and participates in training and developing employee skills and assists in evaluating assigned crews.
Plans schedule and assigns work based on work requests, and the results of facility inspections and requisition materials for work completion.
Supervises and provides lead direction during emergency and storm related work, schedules overtime, on-call 24 hours to call and assigns crews.
Trains employees in minor field repair and service of equipment.
Works with City Attorney's Office in providing information for tree trimming/removal suits and with City arborist on special tree problems.
Explains tree maintenance programs and policies to the public.
Receives and registers requests and complaints from community, and acts as liaison to the general public and other City departments and agencies.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class differs from that of Tree Maintenance Leadworker in that the
incumbents of this classification will receive supervision in tree work from a Senior Tree Maintenance
Leadworker. This class differs from other maintenance classes such as Senior Maintenance Worker and Park Maintenance Coordinator in that the work is highly
specialized in the area of tree maintenance. This class differs from higher Maintenance Supervisor class in that the incumbents of the latter provides
supervision to these classes.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in all phases of tree work.
Knowledge of all safety rules and practices for operating all tree trimming equipment.
Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.
Knowledge of trees and their growth patterns to pruning techniques.
Ability to work safely at substantial heights and recognize hazards when working near high voltage lines.
Ability to supervise and train others in tree/landscape maintenance work and the use of related equipment.
Ability to evaluate progress and recommend to maintenance supervisor whether pass/fail probation.
Ability to recognize disease or unhealthy tree conditions and apply remedies.
Ability to read and interpret sketches, plans, blueprints, and diagrams.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to estimate and order materials necessary for work completion.
Ability to perform arithmetic calculations and to make simple measurements.
Ability to prepare reports and keep records of work completed.
Ability to deal with the public.
Ability to operate mobile radio communication equipment.
Training And Experience
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to the completion of
high school diploma or G.E.D. and five (5) years current experience in the maintenance, trimming and removal of trees and palms, including at least three
(3) years in a lead capacity at the level of Tree Maintenance Leadworker.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a
valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
