PLANT ATTENDANT (3621)

CLASS PURPOSE:
   Under immediate supervision, performs work of routine difficulty assisting in the maintenance of equipment at the Water Pollution Control Plant. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)

• Lubricates and cleans a variety of heavy moving machinery and equipment.
• Adjusts feeds and fills lubricant containers for individual bearings and other parts of machinery.
• Checks temperature of bearings by touch or thermometer.
• Cleans and paints machinery and equipment.
• Participates in the tuning-up, overhauling and repairing of internal combustion engines and other automotive equipment.
• Participates in the dismantling, repairing and overhauling of a variety of plant machinery and equipment.
• Performs minor sheet metal work, rough carpentry and simple electrical repairs.
• Works with mechanics using schematic drawings and sketches.
• Works with mechanics on installation of piping systems.
• Works with mechanics connecting various fixtures, pumps, filters, and tanks to piping systems and installs valves, regulators, gauges and similar devices.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
   This is the entry level class in the wastewater Plant Mechanical Maintenance series and incumbents work in a learning capacity with Plant Mechanics, and Heavy Diesel Equipment Operator Mechanics and participate in work with Electricians and Painters.

QUALIFICATION
   Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of oils, greases, and lubricating devices.
• Knowledge of safety practices and procedures to be observed in work.
• Ability to use standard mechanical and power hand tools
• Ability to read meters, gauges and recording and control devices.
• Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.

Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of machines, hand and power tools and procedures used in maintaining and repairing heavy equipment and machinery such as steam, diesel and electric motors and boilers, pumps, conveyors and generators.

Training and Experience:
    Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of high school and one (1) year of experience in performing minor repairs or servicing of machinery and equipment.

Licenses/Certificates:
   As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
