SENIOR PLANT MECHANIC (3623)

CLASS PURPOSE
   Under general supervision, provides lead direction, training, and performs skilled journey level work of moderate difficulty in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of varied Water Pollution Control Plant equipment. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)

• Leads and performs skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of a variety of machinery and equipment common to sewage treatment plants.
• Leads and performs work in the diagnosis of malfunctions, tune-up, repair, and overhaul of automotive and related equipment.
• Diagnoses operating difficulties and directs and/or performs necessary repairs and adjustments.
• Operates and leads others in operating mechanical equipment required to effect repairs.
• Leads and performs requisite welding, cutting and metal work using either gas or electric arc welding equipment.
• Prepares rough sketches and reads drawings of sub-assemblies/parts; lists materials needed for repairs.
• Operates and leads in the operation of cranes, winches, hoists, dollies, rollers, and forklifts used to remove, install and relocate heavy, unwieldy, or otherwise critical equipment.
• Requisitions the purchase of special parts and/or supplies.
• Leads and trains staff in performance of mechanical duties.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
   Incumbents in this class report to a Plant Mechanical Supervisor and provide lead direction to incumbents in the classes of Plant Mechanic and Plant Attendant. This class represents the third level in the Wastewater Plant Mechanical Maintenance series. It differs from the next higher level class of Plant Mechanical Supervisor in responsibility and level of supervision exercised. Incumbents differ from the next lower class in terms of lead direction responsibilities.

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in repairing and overhauling sewage treatment plant equipment and internal combustion engines.
• Ability to operate gas and electric arc welding equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
• Ability to perform journey level mechanical repair/maintenance work.

• Knowledge of basic safety methods and principles applicable to plant operation and maintenance.
• Ability to lead and train journey level mechanics.
• Ability to requisition parts and supplies.

Education
   Successful completion of high school, General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

Experience
   Four (4) years of experience as a journey level mechanic equivalent to a Plant Mechanic with the City of San Jose, including background in hydraulics, internal combustion engines and sewage treatment plant equipment or closely related equipment.

   None.

Licenses/Certificate
   As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
