SENIOR WATER METER READER (3629)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in
providing supervision to others performing accurate and timely water meter reading and water consumption recording; performs more difficult aspects of
the work. Performs related work.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS: (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Provides supervision to the Water Meter Reading Unit.
Schedules and oversees the meter readers activities including assigning routes, training and evaluating performance.
Receives and resolves customer complaints in the field as needed.
Compiles, records and prepares reports as required and loads and downloads versaterm meter-reading device data files.
Performs minor and temporary field repairs and services on the water meters and reports all meter problems for the Water System Technicians' follow-up check and repair.
Conducts scheduled annual safety checks on all equipment and vehicles assigned to the meter readers.
Coordinates meetings with the Water System Supervisor.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class is the second in a two-level Water Meter Reader series. This
class plans, assigns, directs and evaluates work of incumbents in the lower class of Water Meter Reader; performs more difficult tasks in guaranteeing
that meters are read accurately and on a timely basis. This class is supervised by an Accounting Technician assigned in the Municipal Water System
Customer Accounts Services Section.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of local street names, geography and service-area locations.
Knowledge of water system services, policies and procedures.
Knowledge of small hand tools and their use.
Knowledge of safety procedures.
Knowledge of supervision.
Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations, rapidly and accurately.
Ability to read gauges and record figures accurately.
Ability to identify and report water meter problems and perform minor field repairs and services on the water meters.
Ability to operate the versaterm meter-reading device or comparable hand-held data-input computer.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations.
Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.

Ability to provide lead direction and training.
Ability to coordinate and schedule work.
Ability to effectively handle the majority of difficult customer questions or complaints.
Ability to prepare and maintain required records and reports.
Training and Experience
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of
high school and three (3) years of experience equivalent to a Water Meter
Reader.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in California.
