ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN I (3711)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under immediate supervision, performs sub-professional engineering office and field work of routine difficulty, involving surveying, limited construction inspection, and non-technical office assignments. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Participates as a survey crew-rear chainman, pounds stakes and hubs, measures distances with a tape measure, and holds the elevation rod.
- Participates in investigating damaged or hazardous sidewalk conditions; assists in researching property owners and in contacting them; posts notices and updates maps.
- Performs simple drafting and tracing assignments under close supervision.
- Performs simple and routine quantity take-offs and cost estimates.
- Participates in the preparation of Level of Service (LOS) reports through data collection and elementary computer data storage and retrieval.
- Participates in traffic studies in the office and in the field.
- Receives and delivers prints.
- Searches files for titles.
- Gathers utility information for use in project preparation.
- Field checks existing conditions at proposed development sites.
- Makes routine calculations to affirm areas and dimensions of development sites.
- Prepares graphical documents for reports and presentations.
- Responds to citizen inquiries.
- Reviews aerial prints and maps to check alignment and location of project area.
- Makes simple math/engineering computations.
- Flags cars for traffic control.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class in a technical series. Incumbents of this class perform and learn to perform a variety of sub-professional engineering work under the immediate supervision of a higher level employee, as assigned. This class differs from the next higher class of Engineering Technician II in that incumbents of the latter class perform a variety of sub-professional engineering work under more general supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Knowledge of mechanical drawing and drafting principles and techniques.
- Ability to use simple drafting instruments.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
- Ability to perform routine mathematics (i.e., add, subtract, multiply, divide, solve for the unknown, use basic trig functions).
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of surveying techniques.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform title research.
- Knowledge of and ability to prepare Level of Service (LOS) reports.
- Knowledge of and ability to use computer applications.
- Ability to perform quantity take-offs and cost estimates.
- Ability to set up and maintain an effective filing system.
- Ability to perform field checks and gather required information.
- Ability to analyze aerial maps.
- Ability to perform traffic control using flags.
Education
Successful completion of high school or trade school, or possession of a General Education Development
(GED) certificate.

Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the state of California may be required.
