CLASS PURPOSE
   Under immediate supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in the observation, counting, and recording of traffic data. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)

• Records and enters data on traffic volume, signaling, and other programs.Counts and classifies all vehicles entering an intersection by number, direction of movement, and type of vehicle.
• Observes and records identification of parked vehicles by type of parking on a given route at regular intervals.
• Makes studies of vehicles over a measured distance.
• Observes and classifies the behavior of motorists.
• Measures and records the physical characteristics of streets and highways.
• Records traffic data.
• Provides information for agencies or public requests.
• Prepares charts and diagrams of traffic data.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
   This is the entry level in a two class series. Incumbents perform work of routine difficulty involving the observation, recording, summation and treatment of traffic data preparatory to analysis. Traffic Checker I differs from Traffic Checker II in that incumbents of the former class perform routine, repetitive duties and receive lead direction from incumbents of the latter class.

• Knowledge of State and local traffic laws.
• Knowledge of elementary statistics and the treatment of statistical data.
• Ability to record data with accuracy and legibility and to make arithmetical calculations.
• Ability to observe data objectively and to assemble such data in clear, concise reports.
• Ability to deal with the public and other city employees in a courteous, cooperative manner.
• Ability to record traffic data for entry into automated traffic records system.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

• Knowledge of the California Vehicle Code.
• Knowledge of local city streets, traffic conditions and traffic control programs.
• Knowledge of and ability to use job related computer applications.
• Ability to make job related decisions without constant and continuous supervision.

Education
   Successful completion of high school, General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

Experience
   None.

Acceptable Substitutions
   None.

Licenses/Certificates
   Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of motor vehicle in the State of California.
