CLASS PURPOSE
Under supervision,
leads and performs assignments of moderate difficulty in
observing, counting and recording traffic data. Performs related
work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Regularly performs the more difficult/complex traffic data collection assignments such as: setting up and servicing automatic vehicle counting devices and related equipment; coordinating the scheduling, completion, recording and submission of data gathered; handling centralized data entry responsibilities for all traffic data collected.
Takes the lead in conducting non-routine data gathering activities including origin/destination, time-delay, parking, annexation and related traffic information studies.
Performs the more routine work involved in observing, counting and recording traffic data at intersections on an as needed basis.
Provides lead direction and training to less experienced personnel.
DISTINGUISHING
CHARACTERISTICS
This is the second
level in a two class series. Incumbents perform the more varied
and complex traffic data gathering/recording duties and may
provide lead direction and training to less experienced Traffic
Checkers. Positions in this class report to an Engineering
Technician responsible for the traffic checking function. Traffic
Checker II differs from the lower class of Traffic Checker I in
that the latter are assigned projects of less scope and
difficulty and receive lead guidance from the former.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges,
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of State and local traffic laws.
Knowledge of elementary statistics and the treatment of statistical data.
Knowledge of the California Vehicle Code.
Knowledge of local city streets, traffic conditions and traffic control programs.
Ability to record data with accuracy and legibility and to make arithmetical calculations.
Ability to observe data objectively and to assemble such data in clear, concise reports.
Ability to deal with the public and other City employees in a courteous, cooperative manner.
Ability to encode traffic data for key punch and entry into automated traffic records system.
Ability to operate a key punch machine.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the installation and servicing of automatic vehicle counting devices and related equipment.
Ability to maintain records, correct reports, prepare work schedules and handle other office-related functions.
Ability to lead and train others.
Training and
Experience
Any combination of
training and experience equivalent to completion of high school
and one (1) year of experience at the level of Traffic Checker I.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a
valid California driver's license.
