CLASS SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, provides support in work of moderate
difficulty relative to major City landscape and park improvement projects.
Performs other related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the second level professional class in a four step series where the
incumbent provides project design, project administration and supervision of
employees. Incumbents of this class report to an associate level professional.
This class differs from the next higher level class of associate level
professional in the length of service and the nature, scope and complexity of
assignments. This classification differs from the Structure/Landscape Designer
II classification in that this is a terminal classification used for current
employees who possess a Certificate of Registration issued by the State of
California, whereas the former classification does not require a Certificate of
Registration. Additionally, new hires may not be hired into this classification.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in
Architecture or Landscape Architecture, plus a minimum of 1 year experience at a
level equivalent to Structure/Landscape Designer I with the City of San José.
Acceptance by the State of California for professional registration testing may be substituted for the degree requirement. Proof of acceptance must be provided at the time of application.
Licensing Requirements:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration issued by the State of California Board

| 1. | Prepares sketches, drawings, construction documents, specifications and reports necessary for a contractor to bid on and accurately build a variety of municipal improvements | |
| 2. | Participates in coordinating a full range of project management activities necessary to take a project from project definition through design, public bidding, construction, and to completion of the project. | |
| 3. | Coordinates municipal improvement projects with other City departments, flood control districts, other public agencies and community groups and citizen organizations. | |
| 4. | Provides analysis and cost estimates of construction. | |
| 5. | Undertakes research, investigations and analysis and prepares written reports and project related documents. | |
| 6. | Provides substantive support in coordinating project related consultant design activities. | |
| 7. | May plan, assign, direct and evaluate the work of sub-professional employees. | |
| 8. | Licensed professionals may be responsible for signing off and approving construction plans and drawings for professional landscape architecture work. | |
