OPEN WATER LIFEGUARD (P/T) (6144)
Under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty in the protection of life and the providing of safe open water swimming and recreation conditions in a City operated open water area.
Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties
listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
· Administers first aid and life support as required.
· Supervises health and safety factors and observes public use in the swim/beach areas.
· Enforces City Park regulations that relate to the maintenance of safe swimming conditions.
· At City facilities, identifies, recovers and rescues people who are in danger of drowning.
· Identifies swimmers swimming beyond their level of skill and condition.
· Rescues and assists swimmers who are floundering or fatigued.
· May prepare written reports such as accident reports and others as required.
· Maintains and cares for rescue and lifeguard equipment.
Incumbents of this class function as lifeguards performing recovery and rescue operations in an open water lake environment.
· Knowledge of approved lifesaving methods for water safety and rescue of swimmers, particularly in open water areas.
· Knowledge of rescue and recovery operations.
· Ability to maintain effective work relationships with the public, and fellow co-workers.
· Ability to work cooperatively with the public.
· Ability to immediately evaluate an emergency situation and to act decisively and effectively.
· Ability to administer first aid and CPR according to the prescribed method.

Ability to prepare routine written reports.
Special Qualification
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Possession of First Aid Title 22 Certificate, CPR for Professional Rescuer, and Lifeguard Training Certificate upon appointment.

Prior to hire, sign a declaration that any awareness of child abuse will be reported as required by Cal. P.C. 1166.5.
