CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, is responsible for work of
moderate difficulty developing and supervising major city-wide gerontology
recreation programs and human services or a multi-service Senior Center.
Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the
duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Plans, coordinates and supervises highly specialized city-wide programs
for senior citizens, including the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Senior
Nutrition Programs.
- Plans, organizes, and supervises activities and services for a Senior
Citizens multi-service center which provides recreation, health, housing,
nutrition, legal, and counseling services as well as, information and
referral services, special programs, events, trips, and outings for
participants.
- Supervises recruitment, selection and assignment of volunteers; supervises
screening, selection, and monitoring of community agencies which serve as
Senior Volunteer Stations.
- Develops and implements procedures for assigned program.
- Writes grant proposals and monitors grants.
- Supervises publication and promotion of senior programs through all forms
of media.
- Prepares reports on program operations, such as quarterly reports, monthly
summaries, grant program evaluations, and memorandums.
- Prepares and controls the budget for assigned area.
- Supervises development of resources through fund-raising, solicitation of
donations or co-sponsorships, and obtaining grants to support programs.
- Provides staff assistance to advisory council and other committees.
- Advises staff on the establishment and implementation of program
objectives.
- Supervises employees through training, assigning and monitoring work.
- Recommends employment, retention, promotion, and demotion, and completes
performance evaluations.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
An incumbent in this class is responsible for managing a major city-wide
gerontology program or a multi-service Senior Center. This class differs from
that of Gerontology Specialist in that incumbents in the latter class may be
supervised by this class or may assist in the operation of a multi-service
center or city-wide program. This class differs from that of Principal Recreation
Supervisor in that incumbents of the latter class are responsible for general
recreation programs in a large district comprising several neighborhoods within
the City or for an entire comprehensive city-wide special program.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of service needs of senior citizens, such as physical fitness,
recreation, socialization, nutrition, and health maintenance.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision.
- Ability to coordinate and adapt a variety of special activities of a major
scope to senior citizens.
- Ability to relate effectively to employees, senior citizens and the
public.
- Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in
writing.
- Ability to supervise various special recreation activities for senior
citizens.
- Ability to manage a facility which offers a multiplicity of services for
senior citizens.
Competency Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of City policy and administrative procedures.
- Knowledge of basic accounting and budgeting.
- Knowledge of organizations and agencies providing services to senior
citizens.
- Knowledge of gerontology program standards and their application.
- Knowledge of public information and program promotion techniques.
Education
Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
in Recreation, Leisure Studies, Gerontology or closely related field.
Experience
Two (2) years of specialized gerontology programming experience.
Acceptable Substitutions
There will be no substitution of education for the required experience.
Additional years of increasingly responsible experience in gerontology
programming may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the education
requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Licenses/Certificates
As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a
valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable
endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
