COMMUNICATIONS INSTALLER PART-TIME (8527)

CLASS PURPOSE

Under general supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in the installation of base and mobile radio communications equipment. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)

• Installs mobile radios and digital terminals in City vehicles.
• Assists in the installation of transmitters, receivers, antennas, remote controls, inter-communications systems, sound systems, paging systems, and other varied associated, electronic equipment.
• Assists in the construction and assembly of less complex electronic equipment, working from plans and diagrams.
• Prepares reports of work completed and maintains records of work performed and equipment used.
• May perform routine tests on a variety of radio and other electronic equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a class which may lead into the Communications Technical series. Supervision is received from Technicians generally at the level of Senior Communications Technician. This class differs from the Communications Technician in that an incumbent of that class is at the journey working level. Assignments may be made to any shift in an around-the-clock operation, and incumbents must also be available for work on Saturday, Sunday and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of and an ability to use a variety of small hand tools used in the installation of mobile radio and digital terminals and other related electronic equipment.
• Ability to read and understand simple electronic drawings and diagrams.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the systems and equipment used in the City of San Jose.
• Knowledge of the tools, equipment, practices and methods of installing electronic communications equipment.
• Ability to do shop work in the maintenance and repair of radio and electronic equipment.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of high school and one (1) year of experience in electronics, electrical or mechanical work or related duties.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid California driver's license at time of appointment.
