Health Benefits (Pre-tax Benefit)

The City of San Jose offers four health plans that you may choose from to manage your own health and the health of your family. The cost for your coverage varies based on the plan you choose. However, the City offers a generous cost sharing formula that makes each option very affordable. The 4 options include:

    • Kaiser Permanente
    • Blue Shield HMO
    • Blue Shield POS
    • Blue Shield PPO

Dental Benefits (Pre-tax Benefit)

The City of San Jose offers a generous cost sharing formula for dental plan coverage for all benefited, full-time (40 hours per week) employees. For benefited employees who work 20, 25, or 30 hours per week, the City pays a pro-rated portion of the monthly premium (50%, 62.5%, and 75%, respectively). Options include:

    • Delta Dental of California PPO (including in-network and out of network coverage)
    • DeltaCare USA HMO

Health & Dental in Lieu Plans
The City of San Jose offers Health and Dental In-Lieu plans which offer employees with alternative health and/or dental insurance the option of forgoing coverage under the City's plans. In lieu of deductions for the City's coverage, employees may opt for a taxable in-lieu cash payment on a biweekly basis. This benefit constitutes no risk to the participant since employees can return to the City's health and/or dental plan coverage in the event that they do lose their alternative coverage.

Life Insurance

The City of San Jose offers group life insurance coverage to all benefited full-time employees at no cost. Coverage levels include $10,000 for Police, Fire, and Unrepresented employees, $20,000 in coverage for all other non-management employees, and 2 times the employee's annual base salary for all management employees. (Basic coverage is also available to eligible part-time employees at a pro-rated cost to the employee).

Supplemental group insurance coverage is also available to eligible full-time benefited employees. Management employees may elect coverage amounts of either1x or 2x their annual salary. Non-management employees may elect coverage amounts of either 1x, 2x, 3x, or 4x their annual salary. In addition, eligible employees may elect dependent coverage of either $2,000, $4,000, $6,000, $8,000 or $10,000.
