Compost Overview
Composting is nature's way of recycling organic material such as leaves, grass clippings, twigs, fruit and vegetable trimmings into a dark, crumbly, earthy-smelling soil conditioner.

  • Saves you money by lowering garbage bills and replacing store-bought soil conditioners.
  • Helps garden and house plants by improving the fertility and health of your soil.
  • Saves water by helping the soil hold moisture and reducing water runoff.
  • Benefits the environment by recycling valuable organic resources reducing transport and processing of materials, and reducing waste to our landfills.

Composting Resources
The Master Composter website will enable you to find valuable information on everything you ever wanted to know about composting.

Visit the Santa Clara County Composting Education Program website to learn more about the Master Composter Training program, home composting basics, or to sign up for a free home composting class.

Master Composters teach residents how to build compost piles and worms bins, then how to apply the resulting material in their gardens. They also provide presentations to local schools, community organizations, and events. For more information, contact the Santa Clara County Home Composting Program "Rotline" at (408) 918-4640.
