Trap / Neuter / Return (TNR)
TNR Program
Trap / Neuter / Return (TNR) has proven to be the most humane and effective method of managing feral cat populations. With TNR, a feral cat is humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, then returned to the location where they were trapped. It breaks the breeding cycle while allowing the cat to live out its natural life in its original territory. Ferals that have been spayed or neutered usually have one ear tipped or notched for easy identification.

Cat Trap Loan
ACS supports Trap / Neuter / Return for feral cats and will not loan cat traps to the general public for the purpose of nuisance feral and/or stray cat removal. If you need a cat trap for this purpose, please contact your local hardware store or pet supply store to purchase a trap. When cats are removed from a colony, the colony experiences an abundance of resources, making the environment more hospitable for the remaining animals which results in healthier, more reproductive adults; trapping and removing results in more cats.

ACS will continue to loan traps to individuals who participate in the TNR program. We encourage you to trap, neuter, and return cats to their colonies in order to reduce cat numbers.

Once a cat has been trapped, you may bring it to the shelter Tuesday through Thursday between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.. The cat will be sterilized and ready for you to pick up in the afternoon. Once the cat recovers, usually 24-48 hours after surgery, simply return it to its colony.

Deposit & Fee
You need to leave a $50.00 cash deposit to borrow a small trap and a $75.00 cash deposit to borrow a large trap.. Please bring exact change. Participation in the TNR program is $25.00 per cat.

Please contact Shelter Operations Supervisor Staycee Dains at (408) 794-7205 with questions, comments, or concerns.
