Special Events Guidelines
The Bureau of Fire Prevention (BFP) conducts fire and life safety inspections for all permitted special events activities in the City of San José. Our goal is to provide the community with a cost effective way to ensure all permitted activities are in compliance with all applicable fire codes and standards. BFP supports increasing public awareness and participation in a fire and hazard safe environment. Before scheduling your event please consult the Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) and Parks Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) if you plan on conducting an outdoor event.

The following activities require a special events application submittal 30 days before the event:
 Carnivals and Fairs (Festivals)
Tents, Canopies, & Temporary Membrane Structures
 Pyrotechnic Displays/Special Effects*
 Fire Watch*
 Open Burning
 Candle/Open Flames in Assembly Area*

What to review prior to submitting your application
Prior to submitting your Special Events Application, please be sure to review the fire code requirements that may apply to your event. If you are planning an outdoor Carnival, Fair, or Festival, review the regulations for cooking booth locations, propane cylinders, Fire Department access, and public safety plan guidelines.

Once you have completed all appropriate documents for your event, send your submittal package via email to  or via fax to (408) 292-6067. Please include accurate contact information for the coordinator of your event.
