The City's Green Vision has garnered numerous awards and accolades related to the Green Vision, including:

 Silicon Valley Driving Charged and Connected Symposium The Bay Area Climate Collaborative (BACC) and Silicon Valley Leadership Group awarded the City of San José a 2013 Ready, Set, Charge! Bay Area Electric Vehicle (EV) Readiness Award for being the most electric vehicle ready large community in the Bay Area.
 Acterra Happy Hollow Park & Zoo receives the Acterra's 2013 Business Environmental Award in the category of a Sustainable Built Environment.
 Make a Difference Day  USA Today Magazine Make a Difference Day - San José was awarded the Make a Difference Day award for efforts to involve residents in East San José and Overfelt High School students in an education and action campaign to remove graffiti, picking up litter and offering energy upgrade measures through the Better Buildings Program.

Green City Award

Waste and Recycling News awarded the 2012 Green City Award to the City’s Recycle Plus program for being the most effective and successful residential recycling program for a large city in the United States.

California Trails and Greenways Conference

The City of San José received two Awards of Merit at the 2012 Trails and Greenways Conference, the first in recognition of the City’s Guadalupe River Trail Reach 6 and the second for the Coyote Creek Trail Master Plan. Additionally the California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS) awarded San José two 2012 CPRS Awards of Excellence for those same projects.

Clean Edge

 San José Ranked #1 in U.S. Metro Clean Tech Index: Clean Edge, a national research consultancy released its first annual U.S. Metro Clean Tech Index that provides a comprehensive analysis of how the 50 largest U.S. metro regions compare across the clean-tech spectrum.
 California APA  The San José’s Envision 2040 General Plan received an Award of Excellence, Comprehensive Plan Award for a Large Jurisdiction from both the Northern California American Planning Association and California APA.


San José became the first U.S. city to earn E-Stewards Enterprise designation, which recognizes companies, institutions, and governmental bodies that commit to making best efforts to uphold the highest standards for the responsible management of electronic waste.


CNN Money recognized the Environmental Business Cluster as one of seven hot startup incubators in the nation.

Strom Water Solutions
Storm Water Solutions (SWS) selected the San Jose Environmental Innovation Center - Phase I project as a 2011 SWS Top Projects winner. This remarkable and innovative project was recognized in the December 2011 issue of SWS.

Happy Hollow Park & Zoo was selected as an American Public Works Association - Silicon Valley Chapter Project of the Year (2011).
Energy Awards
In recognition of the San José SunShares program , in conjunction with the City’s overall Green Vision, the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal 2011 Energy Award has named San José the Best Conservation Leader - Public Sector.


In the category of large community, San José won the U.S. Chamber’s Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) 2011 Siemens Sustainable Community Award  for its adoption of Green Vision.
 California Trails and Greenways Conference The City of San Jose received an Award of Merit at the 2011 Trails and Greenways Conference recognizing the City’s structured approach to biennially inspecting the 51 pedestrian bridges found along city trails.
California APA In 2010, the Envision 2040 General Plan was awarded the American Planning Association California Northern Chapter Best Practices Award and the California APA Award of Merit.
First Community Housing's Casa Feliz Studios of San José received the 2010 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) for its Sustainable Facilities Program.
2010 Environmental Design and Construction
Roosevelt Community Center is San José first LEED-NC Gold project and the winner of Environmental Design Construction's Excellence in Design Award.

Happy Hallow Park & Zoo is the nation's first amusement park and zoo to receive LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.


Acterra's 2010 Business Environmental Award for San José's Solar America City Program.


Acterra's 2010 Business Environmental Award for San José's Environmentally Preferable Procurement Policy.
.S. Conference of Mayors U.S. Conference of Mayor's City Livability Honorable Mention award for the San José Green Vision program.
 American Trails American Trails' State-of-the-Art Technology Award honored San José for the Trail Signage and Mileage Marker Guidelines and deployment.
2010 Federal Highway Administration San José’s Trail Network has won two awards from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The City's trail planning practices were commended by the Transportation Planning Excellence award, and promotion of non-motorized travel received the Exemplary Human Environment Initiatives award.  The award programs are co-sponsored by the American Planning Association (APA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
California Trails and Greenways Conference The California Trails and Greenways Conference honored San José with an Award of Merit for the Albertson Parkway project.
CPRS California Parks and Recreation Society honored San José with an Award of Achievement for Coyote Creek Trail (Tully Road to Los Lagos Golf Course).
Forbes Magazine Forbes Magazine recognized San José as the 10th least stressful city, with abundant access to nature noted as an important factor.


CNN Money recognized San José as the 7th best place for a healthy retirement.


The International Economic Development Council's 2009 IEDC Excellence in Economic Development Awards selected the City of San José's Green Vision Program as a winner in the Sustainable and Green Development Category, population group over 200,000.


San José was rated by BusinessWeek as the number one U.S. city to start and grow a clean tech company.


The Roosevelt Community Center, which achieved LEED Gold status in 2009, has won a series of awards for its innovative approach combining building architecture, environmental sustainability, and public art, including the 2009 American Public Works Association Project of the Year and the San José Business Journal "Structures" Award for public green project of the year.

LEED Platinum

The Building Operations and Management Association (BOMA) awarded the City an Emerald Award for Innovation in honor of City Hall achieving LEED-EB Platinum.


The City's Special Event Zero Waste Program received the 2009 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for its outstanding efforts in waste reduction.

Solid Waste Association of North America

The Solid Waste Association of North America awarded San José's new Apartment Recycling Program with its 2009 Recycling System Gold Excellence Award for its unprecedented achievement of 80% waste reduction for multi-family dwellings.

BBC World Service

The City's green fleet was profiled on the BBC World Service Website in over 10 different languages.

National Recreation Trail

The Federal Department of the Interior designated 16.4 miles of San José's trail network (Guadalupe River Trail, Highway 237 Bikeway and Coyote Creek Trail) as part of the National Recreation Trail (NRT). San José was the only California City to secure the designation this year.


2009 California Parks and Recreation Society Award of Excellence for the Airport Parkway Undercrossing.

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition awarded the City the 2009 Platinum Bike Friendly Workplace designation.
 Green Technology Green California Leadership Award San José awarded Green Technology's Green California Leadership Award for City’s environmentally preferable purchasing practices.
