City Council Updates

On Tuesday, the San José City Council unanimously passed a resolution supporting AB 503, an Assembly Bill introduced by Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski that requires the State’s Director of General Services to transfer title of the Agnews Developmental Center to the Santa Clara Unified School District for educational purposes at fair market value.  AB 503 will be at the Accountability and Administrative Review Committee on Wednesday, May 1st at 9:00 am. I would like to thank Assemblymember Wieckowski, Superintendent Bobbie Plough and the Santa Clara Unified School District, as well as all the North San José and Alviso residents, for their strong support throughout this process.  We are one step closer in obtaining the Agnews site for a school campus.

My colleagues and I also approved the proposed 18-Month Workplan and Economic Strategy update. The Office of Economic Development (OED) updated the Council on the accomplishments of economic strategy workplan, status and use of development incentives, proposed economic strategy Workplan, and status of campus development and leasing opportunities.  Our discussion focused on regaining jobs and revenue by encouraging companies to invest their businesses in San José, advancing transportation modes, and creating more vibrant, walkable, mixed-use environments to spur interaction and attract talent to name a few.  For more information please click here.

On Wednesday, the Rules & Open Government Committee approved my recommendation to refer City staff to generate a list of mobile applications and new technology (like Reverse 911) that can notify public, private, and charter schools, afterschool programs and private daycares of public safety threats in their imminent area. City staff will return by August with a report on their findings. The safety of our children is one of my top  priorities. I will continue to ensure that our Police Department explores the use of new technology to make our communities safer.
