Planning Process
Planning staff are committed to engaging the broadest possible spectrum of community stakeholders to most effectively identify the community issues, challenges, and opportunities that guide and inform the development of the Urban Village plan. The community outreach portion of the The Alameda Urban Village consists of three community workshops, of which two workshops have been held and are summarized below. All neighborhood residents, property owners, business owners, and other interested individuals are invited to attend, participate, and provide input on the formulation of the Urban Village plan.

Workshop #1
The Alameda Workshop 1
On October 18th, 2012, over 45 community members participated in the first The Alameda Urban Village community workshop. Participants included neighborhood residents, property owners, and other individuals interested in gaining insight into the Urban Village planning process.

The workshop began with a presentation given by planning staff on Urban Villages and the Urban Village planning process. Participants then broke into groups where they were asked for input on the current state of the neighborhood and the opportunities that exist on the corridor. Additionally, groups were asked to provide input on a vision for the future of The Alameda Urban Village. The final task for participants was to use Lego to construct where they thought new development should be planned.

Workshop #2

On January 30, 2014 over 50 community members participated in the second workshop for The Alameda Urban Village. The workshop was held at the Hoover Community Center located at 1677 Park Avenue. The workshop began with a presentation given by planning staff on what an Urban Village is, a recap on the outcome of Workshop #1, and an introduction to topics of discussion for Workshop #2. Participants then broke into groups where additional information for comment was presented on Land Use, Parks, Public Art, Building Preservation, and Urban Design Framework (building typologies, form, height and setbacks).

Workshop #3

On October 22, 2015, planning staff presented and took comments during the community Open House for The Alameda Urban Village Plan. The meeting was held at Westminster Church on Shasta Avenue. More than 60 people attended. The Plan was well received by the community, neighborhood representatives, business owners and the developers. The Urban Village Plan was built upon community input received at the workshops held in October 2012 and January 2014 and will help shape the future of The Alameda. This Plan is anticipated to be presented to the San Jose City Council by Spring 2016.
