Hammer Theatre Advisory Committee (HTAC)
Created in November 2014 following the bankruptcy of the San Jose Repertory Theatre, the Hammer Theatre Advisory Committee (HTAC) was an ad-hoc committee whose charge is to review options and advise staff in formulating a recommendation to the City Council on the identification of a permanent operator for the Susan and Phil Hammer Theatre Center.   The advisory group was comprised of community members and  individuals with expertise in performing arts, theater and facility management. HTAC held monthly public meetings attended by over 200 people during its tenure.

In May 2015,after overseeing an extensive Request for Interest process, HTAC completed its charge and recommended that the City enter into an agreement with San Jose State University (SJSU) to operate and manage the Hammer Theatre Center.  In late 2015, City Council unanimously approved a three-year agreement with SJSU.

Building on the successful partnership to develop and manage the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, the City and SJSU have the shared goal of developing a new model for operating the Hammer Theatre Center.  The core programming model will have: a) SJSU programming such as theater, opera, dance and music; b) co-produced cultural programming between SJSU and outside cultural organizations; and c) diversified programming through tiered rental for cultural and other organizations. In recognition of the history and design of the facility, professional theater will be given priority consideration.  The goal is to maintain the facility as a high-quality, destination-worthy regional arts facility.
