Two children writingMayor Sam Liccardo launches an Initiative Aimed at Closing the K – 3rd Grade Achievement Gap through Extended Learning After the School Day

SJ Learns is an effort to expand after-school programs for children in Kindergarten through grade three who are most in need of this investment. Dr. Emmett Carson of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, Councilmember Magdalena Carrasco, and Matt Hammer with Innovate Public Schools, chaired the SJ Learns Working Group which met four times between February and May, 2015. See the working group and advisory committee members. This group was tasked with developing a road map for City investment in innovative after-school programs and leveraging this support from foundations, corporate and other private sector partners with the goal of increasing the number of high-quality after-school programs for students in San José.

The academic research amply supports the notion that well-executed extended learning time can have profound impacts on student achievement, particularly for students overcoming barriers such as poverty and a lack of English fluency at home. Finally, our taxpaying residents overwhelmingly support doing so.In the 2015 City of San José Resident Survey, increasing community center hours and after-school programs ranked second among priorities after hiring police officers and tied with city street maintenance. This year we have a City budget that re-establishes the importance of investing in our children’s education and their future.
