Celebrating the power of creative expression, the Office of Cultural Affairs launched the #408Creates campaign in 2016 as part of the San Jose Creates and Connects Initiative.

San Jose Creates and Connects is a series of citywide programs designed to connect residents across communities and within neighborhoods through creative, participatory experiences.

Through these programs, we seek to recognize, celebrate, and promote diverse creative experiences, while building partnerships that enhance opportunities for residents’ own creative expression.

San Jose Creates and Connects programs include:
  • #408Creates: A social media campaign to capture the range of creative expression in San Jose.
  • City Dance: A free, outdoor series of dance lessons in Plaza de Cesar Chavez from August to October.
  • Neighborhood Galleries: A public art program to bring artwork to underpasses citywide.

Collaborations and Special Projects.
We collaborate with other City departments and outside groups on projects large and small which promote creative participation. For example:

  • We provided training and financial support to San Jose arts organizations as part of the national Creating Connections initiative to make arts and culture a recognized, valued, and expected part of everyday life.
  • Currently, we are partnering with Burning Man Projects on Playa to Paseo, a project to bring interactive artwork to public spaces in San Jose.
